Signs of damage

Wall and Ceiling Damage We Repair

Safety tip

If a ceiling is sagging, keep people and pets out from under it and don't poke it to drain the water. Shut off the water if you can, then call, and the crew will relieve it safely.

Water stains and rings

Brown or yellow rings on a ceiling mean water collected above the drywall. The stain can stay small while the wet area above it is much larger.

Sagging or bulging ceilings

Drywall holding water gets heavy and soft, and it can come down without warning.

Swollen baseboards and wet walls

Water on the floor wicks up into drywall and swells baseboards, often well above the height of the water itself.

Bubbling paint and soft drywall

Paint that blisters or drywall that gives when you press it means the paper and gypsum behind it are wet.

Leaks from above

A burst pipe, an overflowing toilet or a leaking washing machine upstairs, an AC condensate line in the attic, or a roof leak in a winter storm all show up first on the ceiling below.

Walls

Water-Damaged Walls

Drywall wicks water

Drywall acts like a sponge. Water on the floor climbs up from the bottom edge, so a leak that never reached the outlets can still soak the lower part of every wall in the room.

Baseboards swell

Baseboards swell and separate from the wall as they absorb water.

Insulation holds water

Wet insulation inside the wall holds water against the framing, so it comes out and the cavity is dried before anything is closed up.

Flood cuts

When drywall can't be dried in place, a straight, level cut is made above the wet line, usually 2 or 4 feet up, so new sheets fit cleanly. Walls behind kitchen and bathroom cabinets are checked too.

Our process

How We Repair Water-Damaged Walls and Ceilings

01

Find the source (on arrival)

Moisture meters and thermal imaging trace the water to where it started and show how far it spread. The leak itself is stopped or handed to a plumber or roofer.

02

Dry the cavity (2 to 4 days)

Air movers and dehumidifiers dry the framing and insulation, with readings taken daily until each material reaches its drying goal.

03

Remove damaged drywall (same day as drying starts)

Sagging, crumbling or contaminated drywall and wet insulation are cut out behind containment so the cavity can dry, and an antimicrobial is applied to the framing where needed.

04

Rebuild and finish

New drywall is hung, taped and finished, the texture is matched, and the surface is sealed with a stain-blocking primer and painted.

Drywall goes back up only after readings confirm the cavity is dry.

Paint or replace

Can You Paint Over Water Damage?

When paint is enough

If the leak is fixed, the drywall is dry and firm, and readings confirm the cavity is dry, a stain can be sealed and painted. It needs a stain-blocking primer first. Regular paint lets a water stain bleed back through within weeks.

Drywall wet with clean water from a supply line can often be saved this way when drying starts quickly.

Repairs are the final step of our water damage restoration in Murrieta, CA.

When drywall has to be replaced

Drywall that is soft, crumbling, sagging, growing mold or soaked by gray water (Category 2) or black water (Category 3) has to come out.

Painting over it hides the problem while the wall stays wet, and mold can start on wet drywall within 24 to 48 hours.

Finishing

Texture and Paint Matching

Texture matched

A patch only looks right when the texture matches. The repair is finished in the same texture as the rest of the room, whether that is knockdown, orange peel, smooth or popcorn.

Paint blended corner to corner

Paint is rolled corner to corner on the repaired wall or ceiling, so the sheen and color blend instead of showing a square patch.

Popcorn ceilings in older homes

In homes built or remodeled before the early 1980s, popcorn ceilings may contain asbestos and should be tested before they are cut or scraped.

Good to know

Wall and Ceiling Repair Cost and Insurance

Cost

Cost depends on how much drywall has to be replaced, whether it is a wall or a ceiling, the texture, how much painting is needed and whether insulation comes out. You get a written scope before work begins.

Insurance

Sudden and accidental leaks, such as a burst supply line or an AC overflow, are usually covered, both the water mitigation and the repairs. Long-term slow leaks usually are not, so the source and timeline are documented with photos and moisture readings for your adjuster.
