Overview

When You Need Water Extraction

Good to know

This page is about removing water after a leak or flood. "Hot water extraction" is a carpet cleaning method and a different service.

Burst pipes and supply lines

A failed supply line under a sink, toilet or refrigerator can put hundreds of gallons on the floor, or through the ceiling below an upstairs bathroom, before anyone notices.

Appliance leaks

Washing machines, dishwashers and water heaters, which sit in the garage in most Murrieta homes, often leak for hours before the water shows up in the next room.

Toilet and tub overflows

Clean or gray water spreads across tile and into carpet and baseboards. Overflows with waste in them are handled as sewage cleanup.

Storm water

Heavy rain between November and March can push water under doors and through windows into living areas.

Leaks under the slab

A leak under the slab shows up as wet carpet or flooring with no obvious source. A plumber repairs the pipe; we remove the water and dry what it soaked.

What Water Extraction Includes

Pulling water out is far faster than drying it out by evaporation. Every gallon removed by extraction is a gallon the dehumidifiers don’t have to pull from the air, which shortens structural drying. All work follows the IICRC S500 standard for water damage restoration.

Extraction is the first step of our water damage restoration in Murrieta; drying and repairs follow.

  • Standing water removal from every affected room
  • Water pulled from carpet, carpet pad and hard floors
  • Hardwood floor extraction with floor-drying mats
  • Moisture mapping of walls, subfloor and cabinets
  • Furniture and contents blocked, lifted or moved out of the wet area
  • Photos and moisture readings for your insurance claim
  • Air movers and dehumidifiers set up after extraction

Equipment

Extraction Equipment We Use

Truck-mounted extractors

The most powerful option for large losses. The unit stays in the truck and hoses run into the house, so it removes water quickly from several rooms without needing household power.

Portable extractors

For upstairs rooms, condos and areas the truck hoses can't reach.

Submersible pumps

For deep standing water in garages and on slab floors, before the extractors take over.

Weighted extraction tools

A technician stands on a weighted tool that presses the carpet and pad, squeezing out water a regular wand leaves behind.

Hardwood floor-drying mats

Mats placed over hardwood pull water up from between and under the boards.

Moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras

Used to find water inside walls, under flooring and in the subfloor that you can't see.

Our process

How Water Extraction Works

01

Make it safe

The technician confirms the water is shut off, checks for electrical hazards before anyone walks through standing water, and contains the water so it doesn't reach dry rooms.

02

Remove standing water

Submersible pumps handle deep water. Truck-mounted or portable extractors take over from there.

03

Extract carpet, pad and hard floors

Weighted tools pull water from carpet and pad, and floor-drying mats go over hardwood.

04

Map hidden moisture

Moisture meters and thermal imaging show how far water traveled into walls, insulation, cabinets and the subfloor.

05

Set up drying

Air movers and dehumidifiers go in the same visit for structural drying, and moisture readings are taken each day until the structure is dry. Drywall or flooring that can't be saved is replaced in the rebuild.

Extraction usually takes a few hours and is done on the first visit. Larger losses with several rooms or deep water can take longer.

Flooring

Carpet, Pad and Hardwood: What Can Be Saved

What happens to your flooring depends on the type of water and how long it sat.

Hardwood can often be saved when water is pulled out before the boards cup. The longer it sits, the more likely cupping and buckling become permanent. Laminate and vinyl plank that has water underneath usually has to be lifted.

Clean water (Category 1)

From a supply line: carpet and pad can often be dried in place if extraction starts quickly.

Gray water (Category 2)

From a washer or dishwasher: the carpet is cleaned and sanitized, and the pad is usually replaced.

Black water (Category 3)

From sewage or outside flooding: carpet and pad are removed.

Water Extraction Cost and Insurance

Cost

Cost depends on how much water there is, how many rooms and floor types it reached, the water category and whether furniture has to be moved. You get a written scope before work begins.

Insurance

Sudden and accidental water damage, such as a burst pipe or an appliance failure, is usually covered by homeowners insurance. Extraction is normally the first line item in the water mitigation part of the claim, so photos and moisture readings are taken for your adjuster before anything is removed.

Murrieta

Water Extraction for Murrieta Homes

Most Murrieta homes are slab-on-grade, so water spreads across the floor and into carpet, baseboards and the bottom of the drywall instead of draining away. With water heaters in the garage, a failed tank often reaches the laundry and hallway before it is found.

We work only in Murrieta’s 92562 and 92563 ZIP codes, from Historic Downtown and Copper Canyon to Greer Ranch and Alta Murrieta. Crews are based in Murrieta, not dispatched from elsewhere in Riverside County.

Questions answered

Water Extraction FAQs

The questions we hear most about water removal.

Most homes take a few hours, done on the first visit. Drying takes another three to five days after that.

It depends on the amount of water, the number of rooms, the floor types and the water category. You get a written scope before the work starts.

A shop vac picks up surface water, but it can’t pull water out of the carpet pad or from under hardwood. The water left behind is what warps floors, causes a musty odor and lets mold start, which can happen within 24 to 48 hours.

Extraction is part of water mitigation. Mitigation covers everything done to stop the damage from spreading: removing the water, drying the structure and protecting what can be saved.

Often, yes, if the water is extracted before the boards cup. Floor-drying mats pull water from between and under the boards, and readings are taken daily until they are dry.

No. Crews move, lift or block furniture as part of the job. Moving soaked, heavy pieces yourself risks injury and can spread the water.
